S. Orange, N.J.- The Villanova Wildcats opened BIG EAST action on Sunday afternoon and defeated Seton Hall on the road 2-0.
Villanova's first shot of the game came in the 7
th minute when
Izzy Newton launced a long shot that went right on goal but was saved.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the 10
th minute. After a long ball was sent down field Seton Hall had the last touch as the ball went out the endline awarding Villanova their first corner of the game.
Emma Weaver played the ball into the box.
Lauren Ashman got a hearer on the ball and played it forward where it found
Makayla Stadler. Stadler was on the move and extended her foot just a yard off the goal line to score.
In the 26
th minute
Lauren Belcuore broke away and was one on one with Grace Gordon, the Pirates keeper. Belcuore took a shot as Gordon ran into the middle of the box and was able to extend her leg to save the shot. The ball rebounded and found
Kelsey DeLola 25 yards out. DeLola launched a shot that went high right.
Just minutes before halftime the Pirates took their first corner of the game. Alex Fuggle was able to get a header off the corner that was right on target, but
Megan McClay was able through traffic to collect the ball to keep Seton Hall scoreless heading into halftime.
The Wildcats netted their second goal in the 56
th minute when Weaver played a free kick 15 yards out of the box on the far side. The ball fell right in front of the far post where Ashman was able to jump and make contact off her leg to put the ball into the right corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
McClay kept the Pirates scoreless with back-to-back saves in the 73
rd and 77
th minute. The first was a diving save to the right to push the ball out and the second was to the bottom left. In the final minutes it was McClay again who was able to scoop up the close shot taken by Caroline Lipton to make the final 2-0.
Next the Wildcats will return home to take on the Xavier Musketeers on Thursday, Sept. 29
