'Cats Close Out Weekend With Loss to Providence

Four Wildcats total double-digit kills, including a career high for Madeline Barber

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova Wildcats finished off its weekend with a defeat, suffering a five-set loss (25-15, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25, 8-15) to the Providence Friars at Jake Nevin Field House on Saturday.

Madeline Barber and Kiera Booth led the way for Villanova (11-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) with 14 kills each, which tied a career high for Barber. Abby Harrell and Skylar Gerhardt each added 13 terminations for the Wildcats.

Andrea Campos put up a match-high 45 assists, Taryn Whittingham contributed 14 digs for a high among all participants and Riley Homer led the match with six blocks.

After the teams traded scores through the first 14 points of the opening frame, it was all Wildcats as separate 5-0 and 7-1 runs allowed Villanova to cruise to a double-digit victory thanks to 17 kills in the set from six different players.

The second stanza was an even matchup with a tie at 10-10, but a 6-1 Providence run created some distance before a 6-2 string from the Wildcats made it a tie at 17-all. It was more back-and-forth action up through 24-24 when PC took two straight points to capture the frame.

Another evenly matched third period was on tap, as the 'Cats and Friars traded runs with 11 ties and five lead changes en route to another 23-23 deadlock. The Wildcats strung a pair of points together with a kill from each of the starting middles, delivering an advantage of two sets to none.

Providence took the first three points of the fourth set and did not look back, leading by as many as eight on the way to a 25-18 victory to force a fifth.

Villanova led early in the fifth, but Providence tied it at five-all and proceeded to use a 4-0 stretch to make the score 9-5 before a VU timeout. PC took both points after that timeout to force another Wildcat pause, trailing by six. The Friars won the race to 15, taking the match in five sets to give Villanova a split on the weekend.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats have a complicated week during VU's fall break, traveling to Georgetown on Wednesday before a visit to Omaha for a match against Creighton on Sunday afternoon.
