VILLANOVA, Pa.—The latest in a string of preseason All-America honors for Villanova graduate student
Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) came from the USILA on Wednesday morning as he was named a second team USILA All-American entering the 2023 campaign. To date Campbell has also been recognized with national preseason honors by
Inside Lacrosse and
USA Lacrosse Magazine. He was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad which was announced last month.
Campbell enters the year ranked fifth in school history in career goals scored (117) and is tied for sixth in the Villanova record book in points (168). He is a veteran of 49 games played during his collegiate career and led the Wildcats in goals (45) and points (67) last season while ranking second on the team with 22 assists. He was named a first team All-America selection by
USA Lacrosse Magazine in addition to being a second team selection by USILA and
Inside Lacrosse.
Villanova is coming off a strong 2022 campaign in which it recorded a winning record for the seventh consecutive season, including the fourth time in that span winning at least nine games. Head coach
Mike Corrado guided the Wildcats to a 9-5 record last year and the program's first appearance in the BIG EAST championship game in eight years. Villanova went 3-2 in regular season conference action a year ago and earned the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship before tallying a last-minute win over #2 seed Denver in the conference semifinals.
Corrado and his coaching staff welcome back 32 student-athletes from last year's team, including a trio of 2022 all-conference performers in Campbell, short-stick defensive midfielder
Chet Comizio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and senior faceoff specialist
Justin Coppola (Garden City, N.Y.). Villanova is receiving votes in both the IL Men's Division I Preseason Rankings and the USILA Preseason Division I Coaches' Poll. The team began preseason training in earnest on January 17 and is preparing for its season opener on February 12 at home against Penn State.
