SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Villanova softball team picked up a second straight victory in Texas, as the Wildcats took down the Texas State Bobcats 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Tess Cites had an impressive day at the dish for Villanova (2-1), going 3-for-5 with two runs scored on the day. Third baseman Chloe Smith added two hits while four different Wildcats recorded an RBI.
Sophomore Ava Franz became the third person in Villanova history to earn four walks in the same game, marking the third time it's happened in the last three seasons.
Freshman pitcher Kat Gallant delivered a strong performance in her collegiate debut, going all seven innings for the win and allowing just six hits and two unearned runs while striking out four.
Texas State opened the scoring in the second inning, as back-to-back errors from the Wildcats allowed a Bobcat to cross the plate.
Villanova answered back in the next frame, as Cites hit a leadoff single and came around on an Ally Jones groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bobcats regained the lead with a double in the home half of the third, scoring a second unearned run to take the advantage.
Cites again opened the fifth inning with a single, then was brought home by a Kelsey White base knock to bring the score even again.
In the sixth inning, Franz drew her third walk of the game and four batters later, Smith singled her in for the 'Cats first lead of the day.
VU extended its advantage with a two out rally in the final stanza, with Ryan Henry tripling and consecutive walks from Franz, Madison Ostrowski and Victoria Sebastian brought her home.
The victory marks Villanova's first over Texas State and the third ever over a Sun Belt opponent.
