BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Villanova Wildcats suffered a late-inning loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Wisconsin Badgers 3-2 at the Joan Joyce Classic.
Peyton Schnackenberg earned the loss for Villanova (5-8) despite striking out eight batters and allowing just five hits, two walks and three earned runs on the day.
The Wildcats began the scoring in the second frame, as Brooklyn Ostrowski led off the inning with a base hit. Two batters later, her sister Madison Ostrowski came to the plate and delivered a two-out single to bring Brooklyn in to score and give VU a 1-0 advantage.
Wisconsin leveled the game in the ensuing frame, as a double got a runner in scoring position and a two-out infield single brought the run home and made the score 1-1.
Villanova regained the lead in the fourth inning as Ava Franz beat out a dribbler to give the 'Cats a leadoff baserunner. Lilly St. Jean came to bat and blasted a pitch into right center field for a double, scoring Franz from first and giving VU a 2-1 edge.
The Badgers again made it a tie ballgame in the fifth, with two singles, a hit by pitch and a walk allowing UW to bring the game to 2-2.
Wisconsin came to bat in the seventh inning with a chance to walk it off. The leadoff hitter drew a walk, and a sacrifice bunt moved her all the way to third. The first batter in the lineup went to the plate and laid down a suicide squeeze, which allowed the Badgers to win the game 3-2.
