TOWSON, Md. – An early one-run Villanova lead was thwarted by Towson in the bottom of the sixth to take the 3-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Villanova (1-6) led Towson (2-6) 2-1 for four innings before the Tigers earned a tying run in the bottom of the sixth and the 3-2 winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior catcher
John Whooley had a strong performance hitting an RBI double to left field in the top of the second. Whooley also had seven putouts, two assists, and caught a runner attempting to steal second on the day.
Zach Camp pitched for 2.1 innings coming in for
Luke Matta in the bottom of the second. Camp struck out two batters without allowing any hits or runs in his time on the mound.
Stephen Turzai came in to relieve Camp to start the bottom of the fifth for a total of 2.0 innings. Turzai faced the most batter of the day to any one pitcher (10) and struck out one while only allowing one run in.
Villanova continued their streak of now seven consecutive games with a scoreless first inning.
Graham Moore began the campaign for the Wildcats with his first collegiate strikeout with no hits or runs scored.
The 'Cats got their bats going in a big second inning.
August Biggio hit a single into center field with one out.
Collin Quintano followed the single up with a double into left center field to move Biggio into scoring position.
Cameron Hassert had a RBI ground out to send Biggio home and Whooley clipped an RBI double for the 2-0 lead.
Towson got two players on base to start the bottom of the second. Bobby Spencer singled up the middle to load the bases and the Tigers scored on a sacrifice fly to center field hit by Jordan Peyton to trail Villanova 2-1.
Thanks to the Villanova pitching staff, the Wildcats held the lead until the bottom of the sixth. With one on and two outs, Spencer cranked an RBI triple to equalize the score 2-2. The Tigers followed up with another run in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead off of another sacrifice fly. Villanova struggled to get out of the half inning making a total of three pitching changes to finally get a stop.
The Wildcats remained scoreless for the rest of the game due to a strong performance from Nate Nabholz who pitched 3.0 innings and Spencer who earned the winning throwing for the last three innings. Spencer fanned three Wildcats and protected the lead until the end of the competition. Both Nabholz and Spencer were able to shut down the top of the Wildcat lineup with the top four Villanova batters going 0-4 on the day.
