Villanova Falls 8-3 At Georgetown in BIG EAST Opener

Chloe Smith tallied a double and a run scored

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the BIG EAST softball opener at Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, the Villanova Wildcats suffered an 8-3 loss to the host Georgetown Hoyas. With the setback, Villanova falls to 8-13 on the year, while Georgetown improves to 4-14. 

Georgetown took control of the game early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Hoyas put the first five batters on base to start the inning on a Wildcat error, three walks and a single. Following a base on balls that forced in the game's first run, Hoya center fielder Cameron Kondo delivered a two RBI single to push the Georgetown lead to 3-0. 

The final two runs of the second inning for Georgetown came on a RBI single by Kayla Dunn and a wild pitch. 

Georgetown increased its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Following a one-out double by Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza, Dayanara Campos singled to advance Inzunza to third. Inzunza would then come on to score on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Zamora. 

Villanova loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning on two walks and a single. After a force out at home and a strikeout, freshman Madison Ostrowski delivered an RBI single and Villanova was on the board. The Wildcats then cut the Hoya lead to 6-2 when Dani Dabroski reached on an error, scoring Chloe Smith

Georgetown added two insurance runs and took an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Mae Forshey. 

The Wildcats added a run in the top of the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Ally Jones and Smith.         

Villanova tallied five hits in the loss, while Georgetown had eight.  

Starting pitcher Julia Parker was credited with the win for the Hoyas. She gave up one hit, while striking out six in five innings of action. Graduate student Peyton Schnackenberg earned the loss for the Wildcats. She pitched an inning and a third allowing five runs on two hits and three walks. Only one of the five runs was earned. 

UP NEXT: The 'Cats will play another on Saturday, taking part in a doubleheader against the Hoyas after Friday's rainout.
