Villanova, meanwhile, rallied to finish 17-16 overall, 10-10 in the BIG EAST after enduring a series of injuries that left them without standout guard Justin Moore for 20 games, BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Cam Whitmore for seven games and sophomore guard Jordan Longino for eight games in the thick of the BIG EAST schedule.
This will be the Wildcats' first NIT appearance since 2004 and 18th overall. Villanova advanced to the championship game of the NIT in 1965 falling to St. John's 55-51 and claimed the 1994 NIT crown, downing Vanderbilt in the championship game at Madison Square Garden, 80-73.
"We're excited about the field that we were able to put together," said Wren Baker, vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics at West Virginia and chair of the NIT committee. "There are going to be some great early round matchups and I think our semifinal teams are going to have a great experience in Las Vegas."
The 2023 semifinals and championship move to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for one year after a storied 83-year history at Madison Square Garden in New York.
