NEW YORK—Two of the veteran players on the Villanova roster earned BIG EAST weekly recognition as midfielder
Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) and goalie
Will Vitton (Summit, N.J.) were each named to the Honor Roll announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. It is the fourth time this season that Campbell has garnered weekly conference recognition and the third time that Vitton has been honored. Through the first six weeks of the 2023 campaign the Wildcats have earned 13 weekly BIG EAST awards.
Campbell and Vitton each starred in a 10-6 win over Monmouth over the weekend which pushed Villanova's record to 6-1 on the year. The record matches the team's best start through seven games since 2018 and nudged the Wildcats up to No. 7 in both national polls released on Monday morning. Villanova has won five straight games and is set to return home for its next three contests after more than a month of road and neutral site contests.
In the win over Monmouth the Wildcats jumped out to an 8-1 first half lead with Campbell helping lead the way. He led all players in the game with four goals and five points, including three of his points coming during the first half run. Villanova trailed 1-0 in the opening minutes of the game, but Campbell's first score of the day midway through the first period gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish. He added a goal and an assist later in the first half, then scored twice in the second half to help thwart any chances of the host Hawks mounting a rally.
Campbell recorded his third game this season and 14
th of his career scoring at least four goals. He is continuing to surge in the Villanova record book, with his career totals standing at 136 goals, 60 assists and 196 points. Campbell has already become the Wildcats all-time leading goal scorer this season and he is now just four points shy of 200 for his career and 17 points away from the standing program record of 213 held by
Rick Bontatibus (1991-94).
The win over Monmouth featured another sterling performance in goal from Vitton, who recorded his second-highest save total of the season with 13 stops. He reached double digits in saves for the third straight game and fifth time this season while playing his best during the first half when the game was hanging in the balance. Vitton had eight saves by halftime against the Hawks, including six in the second quarter alone as Villanova built a big lead.
Vitton is the active career leader in Division I with 2,982:22 career minutes in goal. With his 13 saves on Saturday he now has 587 for his career and is just 13 shy of becoming the fourth player in program history to reach the 600 milestone. Vitton notched career win No. 32 against Monmouth and is only two victories away from tying the Wildcats all-time record of 34 wins held by
Joe Canuso (2003-06).
Villanova hosts Navy on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
