VILLANOVA, Pa. – Two games remain on the regular season schedule for Villanova as the team heads up to the LIU campus in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Saturday. The Wildcats will start the day against No. 18 Wagner at 10 a.m. before facing La Salle at 4 p.m.
Villanova (14-17, 4-7 MAAC) split last weekend's home contests, defeating Siena 18-8 before falling to Mount St. Mary's 13-10. A trip to the MAAC Championship is on the line this weekend for the Wildcats. The top three teams from the Blue and Red Divisions will land spots in the championship that is set for April 28-30 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The 'Cats head into the weekend sitting fourth in the Red Division standings with a .364 winning percentage in league action. Wagner (27-6, 10-0 MAAC) currently leads the not just the Red but the entire conference, still without a loss in MAAC play. La Salle (14-14, 4-6 MAAC) is currently third in the Red Division with a .400 winning clip, so Villanova would need to defeat the Explorers to earn a spot in the championship field.
Saturday will mark the second time that Villanova has faced Wagner and La Salle this season. The last time the 'Cats and Wagner went head-to-head was on March 19 with the Seahawks winning 18-9 after putting the 'Cats into a six-goal deficit before halftime. Villanova is 3-44 against Wagner all-time, falling in 13 consecutive meetings. Wagner heads into Saturday with a conference-leading five-game winning streak that has seen it outscore its opponents 95-50 in that span. Of those five wins, three came with at least 20 goals scored by the Seahawks. The last two victories came with MAAC Rookie of the Week Francesca Sena in net for Wagner, stopping 17 shots and grabbing two steals.
This will be the 12 all-time meeting between Villanova and La Salle. Villanova leads by a slim 6-5 margin in the series that dates back to 2017. The Wildcats have won back-to-back meetings with the Explorers including the most recent 9-8 victory on March 26. Villanova netted two late goals to get the final push it needed to win that contest. The Explorers have won three of their last five games heading into the weekend. Their last victory was a 13-4 decision over St. Francis Brooklyn last weekend that started with a quick 5-0 lead that set the tone for the rest of the game. La Salle will start the weekend against hosting LIU at noon Saturday before the decision-maker game with Villanova in the afternoon.
Both games can be streamed live via ESPN3 on Saturday.
