BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Villanova faced a high-powered offense from No. 18 Wagner on Saturday, falling 15-4 at the LIU Pool.
Stella Byles led the team with two goals in the loss.
Both the first and third periods saw Villanova (14-18, 4-8 MAAC) go without a goal scored, being outscored by Wagner (28-6, 11-0 MAAC) 9-0 in those frames combined. The Wildcats used all three goalies in the defeat with
Sarah Shaw moving to 2-6 on the season.
The Wildcats fell into a 4-0 hole in the first with a pair of one-on-one goals getting past
Sarah Shaw. Villanova had a chance to get on the board with a powerplay late in the frame, but
Allie Hansen's shot was blocked by the defense and sent sailing out of play, leaving the 'Cats scoreless.
Abigail Shelby made her way into the net for Villanova to start a second quarter that saw Villanova game some ground.
Emily McKenzie made the break that Villanova needed to get on the board. With a Seahawk on her back, she made a turn-around move to send a shot into the cage, cutting into Wagner's lead, 4-1. The Seahawks answered with a 3-0 run, including a goal from Andrea Arias for a second goal on a day where she would go on to score four. Carlota Alonso was whistled for an exclusion, giving Villanova another powerplay.
Sara Withers sent a shot from the right that made its way to the back left of the net, ending Wagner's run and cutting the deficit to five at 7-2 by the end of the half.
Villanova faced another pair of Wagner goals early in the second half to trail by seven at 9-2. A close shot attempt from the Seahawks was met by a powerful block from Shaw who re-entered between the pipes in the third for the 'Cats. After Wagner tacked on another goal,
Emily Morrissey sent in a shot that was called back, leaving Villanova down by eight. The Seahawks kept their foot on the gas in the frame, adding on two more goals to make it a 12-2 game heading into the fourth.

Gracin Kerry sent a long pass down the pool that was picked up by Byles and sent into the back of the net for a 12-3 score. After another Wagner goal, Byles sent a shot that deflected off of the fingertips of Wagner's goalie Hayden Hasler, getting the score to 13-4. The Seahawks closed the contest with two more goals.
The Wildcats close out the regular season as they take on La Salle at 4 p.m. in the LIU Pool.
