VILLANOVA, Pa.—Fifth year Wildcats standouts
Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) and
Chet Comizio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) were each named first team USILA All-Americans in an announcement made on Thursday afternoon. The USILA is the third organization to name Campbell and Comizio first team honorees for the 2023 season, following
USA Lacrosse Magazine and the
Inside Lacrosse Media All-American reveals in recent weeks.
This is the first time in program history that Villanova has had multiple players be first team All-America selections by the USILA. It is the second season in a row that Campbell and Comizio have each been recognized on all three of the major All-America teams announced by
USA Lacrosse Magazine,
Inside Lacrosse and the USILA. The pair were instrumental in the Wildcats recording one of their best regular seasons in the past several years in 2023.
Villanova wrapped up the 2023 campaign with a 10-5 record and was nationally-ranked for each of the last 10 weeks of the regular season. This is the eighth consecutive year with a winning record for the Wildcats, who were the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and reached double figures in victories for the first time since 2018. Campbell was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, with Comizio joining him as a first team all-conference selection.
Campbell was one of 25 trophy nominees for this year's Tewaaraton Award. During the season he was a conference weekly honoree seven times, earning Midfielder of the Week honors on four occasions and being named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll three other times. He led the Wildcats with 62 points which is the sixth-most in a single season in program history. He led the team with 25 assists and ranked second on the squad with 37 goals scored. Campbell ranked second in the BIG EAST with an average of 4.13 points per game. He was also third in the conference in assists and fourth in goals.
During the season Campbell broke the Wildcats career records for goals and points. He finished his outstanding collegiate career with totals of 154 goals and 230 points, with his 76 career assists putting him seventh in school history. Campbell ranks third among active Division I players in career goals scored and is fourth on the active career points list. He is a four-time BIG EAST selection and has been a first team pick each of the last three seasons. Following the season he was chosen by the Cannons with the ninth selection in the 2023 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft.
It was another stellar season for
Comizio, the team's top SSDM who was a top performer on the Villanova defensive unit and also played on the wing on faceoffs. Comizio had 50 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers on the year to go along with two goals, three assists and five points. He picked up a career-high seven ground balls at then-No. 10 Delaware in a 13-12 victory in the third game of the season which propelled the Wildcats into the national rankings where they would eventually remain for the duration of the season. Comizio is sixth in Villanova history with 53 career caused turnovers. He earned both preseason and midseason All-America status as a fifth year player this year, with
Inside Lacrosse selecting him on its midseason first team.
