VILLANOVA, Pa. – Two fifth-year swimmers will be in the pool for Villanova Women's Swimming and Diving this year, the program announced today.
Margaret Kleinsmith will stay with the team for another season while the 'Cats welcome in graduate transfer Lauryn Johnson.
Kleinsmith, a breaststroke swimmer, returns to the Main Line after helping the program win its 10
th consecutive BIG EAST Championship this past season, 15
th overall. Johnson, a 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier, also brings in a bevy of experience from her time at UCLA where she swam butterfly and freestyle.
A native of Mount Kisco, N.Y., Kleinsmith has racked up six-time All-BIG EAST performances in her career and was the BIG EAST Champion for the 100 Breast in her freshman season. This past season, earned silver in the 100 Breast, clocking in at 1:02.21. She also posted a personal best in the 200 Breast at this year's conference meet with a 2:16.02 time that was good enough for fourth place. In the last four seasons, Kleinsmith has been medaled in the 100 Breast three times, adding a pair of 200 Breast medals and helping the 2021 400 Medley Relay team to a silver medal.
Johnson swam for the Bruins for four seasons, winning two individual events in her career. This past season, she swam in eight of the team's 12 regular season meets before heading to the Pac-12 Championships. At the conference meet, she made the C Final in the 200 Fly, finishing 23
rd with a time of 2:04.22. She also posted a personal best in the 50 Free during prelims at 23.51. In 2021, the Rockville Centre, N.Y. native competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials, touching in 2:04.21 in the 200 Fly for a 38
th-place finish.
