RICHMOND, Va. -- CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) Football held a virtual media day on Tuesday, July 25. During the zoom call, the league announced the 2023 preseason All-Conference team and the 2023 predicted order of finish.
Villanova had two players named to the preseason All-CAA squad with graduate student wide receiver
Jaaron Hayek (Wayne, N.J.) and graduate student offensive lineman
Michael Corbi (Annapolis, Md.) earning the honors. Graduate student safety
Jalen Goodman (Narberth, Pa.) and graduate student kicker
Matthew Mercurio (Salinas, Calif.) were both named to the preseason Honorable Mention team.
Hayek earned first team All-CAA accolades in 2022 when he had 36 receptions for 810 yards and eight touchdowns. He also registered four 100-yard receiving games. Corbi has been a mainstay along the offensive line throughout his Wildcat career. He garnered first team All-CAA distinction and second team All-American acclaim in 2021 and he was a second team All-Conference honoree last season.
Goodman ranked second on the team in tackles a season ago with 70 total stops, including 45 solo tackles. He also added two tackles for loss, one forced fumble and an interception. Mercurio was a third team All-CAA selection in 2022 after he connected on 10-of-12 in field goals and 35-of-35 in PATs.
In the preseason coaches' poll, Villanova is picked to finish seventh with 129 points. William & Mary was selected to repeat as league champion with 195 points and 13 first place votes.
