Villanova Drops Heartbreaker to Lasalle

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa—Villanova fell to Lasalle 4-3 as the Explorers scored with four minutes remaining to win the game.

In a game that saw numerous penalty strokes, replay reviews, and corners the Wildcats came up short. After taking a 2-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals from Meghan Mitchell and Emma Schwarz, Lasalle responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead into the fourth quarter. Mitchell then poked the ball in during a scramble in front of the net to tie the game at three. Then with just under five minutes remaining, Tatum Johnson found Sol Espona for the game winner.

The third quarter proved to be the difference maker. Mitchell put Villanova ahead but after review, the goal was disallowed. Emma Leppert then saved a penalty stroke to keep the score tied before Clara Larripa put the Explorers ahead to close out the period.

The loss snaps a four-game win streak against the Explorers.

Lasalle was keen on defending penalty corners as the Wildcats only converted two of 16 corners, including four in the final three minutes. Villanova was led by Mitchell with two goals, boosting her team leading points total to 14. Schwarz scored her second goal of the season in the loss.

Emma Leppert finished with six saves for the Wildcats.

BIG EAST play begins on Friday, September 15th as the Wildcats travel to Towson, Md. to take on Georgetown. Game time is set for 11am.
