Wildcats Sweep Sacred Heart to Kick Off Villanova Classic

Freshmen hitters Abby Harrell and Marly Smith lead the way for the 'Cats

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova volleyball picked up a quick win on Friday night, sweeping the Sacred Heart Pioneers in straight sets (25-10, 25-17, 25-20) to open the Villanova Classic at Jake Nevin Field House.

It was a pair of freshmen pacing Villanova (8-3), as Abby Harrell totaled 15 kills and Marly Smith put up a career-high 11 terminations on .526 hitting. Andrea Campos contributed a match-high 32 assists while Taryn Whittingham added a 11 digs and two service aces to lead all participants.

"Tonight was a good bounce back for us," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "It feels good to be back in Nevin. Marly stepped up for us today and played really well."

Two of VU's reserve middle blockers also got run for the 'Cats, as Annika Veurink put up a pair of kills and Ozzie Ozonoh closed out the match with her first termination in nearly two years.

The Wildcats dominated the opening set, using a 7-0 run to grab a commanding lead. Villanova got out to a 15-5 advantage in the frame and cruised to a 25-10 win.

It was another hot start for the Wildcats in the second stanza, doubling up Sacred Heart 12-6 early in the period. The Pioneers brought it back within three at one point, but a closing 4-0 Villanova stretch gave the 'Cats a two set lead.

The third game was a much closer affair, as the teams mainly traded points and short runs up to an 11-10 VU edge. The Wildcats used a 5-0 run to establish some distance, then continued on to a 25-20 set win and a sweep of the match.

With the victory, Villanova moves to 4-1 all-time against the Pioneers.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats will finish out their non-conference slate on Saturday, wrapping up the Villanova Classic against Saint Francis at 7 p.m. from Jake Nevin Field House.
