Wildcats Fall to Fairfield in Double Overtime

FAIRFIELD, Conn—Villanova fought hard but came up short on Sunday afternoon. Carmel Van Dijk netted the game winner for the Stags in double overtime.

Amanda Middleman opened the scoring in the second quarter when Maeve Boston found her open in the arc for her seventh goal of the year. After that there was not much going on for the 'Cats offensively as they only registered three shots on goal after Middleman put them ahead.

The third quarter proved to be impactful. Fairfield tied the game early in the third quarter, converting on a penalty corner. Then Sabine de Ruijter saw her penalty stroke saved by goalkeeper Gabby Gober to keep the score tied at one.

Villanova recorded two penalty corners in overtime, with the Stags blocking both shot attempts. Emma Leppert was able to force a second overtime by making three big saves in the last two minutes of the period. The junior goalkeeper was credited with six saves in the loss. Four minutes into the second overtime, Alex Senior weaved her way into the circle and found Van Dijk for the game winner.

The celebration for head coach Joanie Milhous' 250th win will have to wait another week. The 'Cats return home to the Conshohocken Proving Grounds on Friday, September 29th when they face Uconn at 4pm.
