VILLANOVA, Pa. – A Saturday night matchup at the Wells Fargo Center brings the nation's No. 1 team, Connecticut, to South Philadelphia to meet Villanova. The BIG EAST battle is set to tip off shortly after 8 p.m.
Â
The game will air nationally on FS1 with Alex Faust and Jim Spanarkel courtside to describe the action. In addition, Ryan Fannon and Whitey Rigsby will be on site for the call on the Villanova IHeart Radio network.
Â
The Wildcats (11-6 overall, 4-2 BIG EAST) return to the Center for the third time this season. They dropped a 57-55 decision to Drexel in the Big Five Classic on Dec. 2 and one week later knocked off UCLA 65-56.
Â
A crowd approaching the building's 20,056 capacity is expected to be on hand for this one.
Â
Villanova last saw action Monday afternoon on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in Milwaukee. The No. 17 Golden Eagles broke a 57-57 tie at the midpoint of the second half and went on to post an 87-74 triumph at Fiserv Forum.
Â
This marks the second consecutive ranked opponent for Villanova. It will be followed by road games next week at St. John's, which downed the 'Cats 81-71 on Jan. 6, and Butler before a return engagement with Marquette on Jan. 30 at Finneran Pavilion.
Â
It could be viewed as a daunting stretch but for head coach,
Kyle Neptune, that's not much of a focal point.
Â
"The Big East is all good teams," said Neptune. "It doesn't do us any good to study the records. We look at it like it legitimately doesn't matter. Every team in this league is a high-level team. If you don't come to play and they play harder than you, it's going to be tough."
Â
The Huskies (16-2 overall, 6-1 BIG EAST) share the conference lead with Seton Hall. On Wednesday evening, UConn defeated Creighton. It leads the BIG EAST in Field Goal Percentage (.498) and Field Goal Percentage Defense (.396) as well as Rebounding Margin and Assists.
Â
"This is clearly an outstanding team that is the No. 1 team in the country for a lot of reasons," noted Neptune.
Â
For the Wildcats, they hope to build on an offense that has been more productive in its last two outings, generating a season-high 94 points against DePaul and 74 more at Marquette. Part of that boost has come from sophomores
Mark Armstrong – who established a new career points vs. the Golden Eagles (24) – and
Brendan Hausen, who has averaged 14.0 points per game over the last two contests.
Conversely, the Wildcats hope to reinforce a defense that had been quite sturdy before surrendering 60 points in the paint on Monday afternoon.
Â
"Marquette's a really good team – give them credit," said Neptune. "We just have to get better at locking down defensively."
Â
Villanova will honor its 2024 inductees into the Varsity Club Hall of Fame – which includes Wildcats' legend Allan Ray and team chaplain Rev. Rob Hagan, O.S.A. – at halftime of this game.
