VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova returns to its home pitch Wednesday afternoon looking to put together a finishing kick to its regular season. Georgetown (7-3-4 overall, 4-1 BIG EAST) will be at the Higgins Soccer Complex at 3 p.m. (BIG EAST Digital Network will have the live stream of this contest).
This is the first of a three-game home stand for the Wildcats, who are in search of their first BIG EAST win of the regular season (1-8-4 overall, 0-5-0 BIG EAST).
"We're disappointed that the results haven't been there," said head coach Mark Fetrow, "but the belief and spirit of the group is strong. We've talked about the fact as a program we haven't beaten Georgetown in a long time. We have an opportunity Wednesday against a team that has been playing very well of late."
The Hoyas bring a 5-1-1 record over their last seven outings into Wednesday's clash on Villanova's West Campus.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, view the remaining three conference games as a chance to hopefully make a late charge to the postseason.
"The first step to that is putting together a complete 90-minute effort," said Fetrow. "We've had good stretches and competed well. To win in the Big East, though, requires a full 90-minute effort without any mistakes, especially in your own end."
Indeed, early deficits hampered Villanova in each of its last two BIG EAST outings. They fell behind Akron 3-0 in the first 35 minutes before falling on the road 3-2. At Creighton on Saturday, they were down 2-0 at halftime.
"Falling into a hole at this level puts you in a tough spot where you have to chase the game," Fetrow said.
Villanova's last win over the Hoyas came in Washington in 2007, a 1-0 triumph. Georgetown is 16-0-1 against the Wildcats in the years since, including a 2-0 win last season.
In their last appearance at Higgins, Villanova posted a 3-2 win over Columbia on Oct. 8. The Wildcats are 1-2-2 at home this season.
Wednesday's matchup is a Bonus Student Lottery game. All Villanova students attending will receive bonus points ahead of the 2024-25 Men's and Women's Basketball seasons, which get underway next month.
