Villanova Drops Regular Season Home Finale to No. 23 Georgetown

The Wildcats were outshot 26-3 in the loss

VILLANOVA, Pa. – After heading into the half down by a goal, Villanova could not find its way back, falling to No. 23 Georgetown 3-0 on Thursday in its regular season home finale at Higgins Soccer Complex.

Villanova (5-6-5, 2-2-4) has gone seven home games without a win since August 23, going 0-4-3 since then on the Main Line. Georgetown (11-2-4, 7-1-1) outshot the 'Cats 26-3 on the afternoon, 10-2 in shots on goal.

With the loss, Villanova still holds 10 points in the conference standings with two games to play in the regular season.

"We're in a position that we haven't been in in a few years, anyone on the team really, where we're kind of in the driver's seat when it comes to playoffs," head coach Samar Azem said. "There's a certain level of pressure that comes with. It's not a bad thing, but when you have experience, you know how to handle that. I thought that today we learned that that's something we have to handle and, because we didn't prepare ourselves to handle it well enough, we were not ourselves today. You kind of have to learn lessons the hard way when you're a young team."

Villanova's lone shot of the first half came off the foot of Susanna Soderman in the 10th minute but was grabbed by Cara Martin. From there, Georgetown's offensive onslaught through the 45 began, keeping the 'Cats without a shot the rest of the half.

Wildcat keeper Hannah Dickinson made a big two-handed save in the 18th minute off of a Shay Montgomery shot, her second save to that point. It took until the 32nd minute for a break to be made as Maja Lardner played an inside look across the box that glanced off of Dickinson's hand before finding Natalie Means to score it near the post to make it a 1-0 Hoya's advantage.

The Hoyas had a chance to extend their lead in the 42nd minute but a header goal from Cyanne Doyle ended up called off due to an offside call. At the break, Villanova was being outshot 16-1 with five of those chances being saved by Dickinson.

A throw in for Georgetown in the 59th minute made its way to Henley Tippins who was able to get away from some Villanova defenders and get the ball to Montgomery. She evaded Wildcat defenders to boot in a goal, extending the Hoyas' lead to 2-0.

Villanova's best chance of scoring in the second half came in the 81st minute off of a corner that sailed into the box. Caroline Graham headed in the in-swinger that hit the ground near the six-yard box. Lauren Ashman was near for a rebound chance but Anna Karpenko who entered the goal at halftime landed on it for the save.

The Hoyas netted the dagger in the 86th minute on a rocket launch from Eliza Turner. A long cross was punched away by Dickinson and picked up by Esme Brayshaw. She passed to Turner who sent a shot from 23 yards out at the top of the box and past a diving Dickinson for a 3-0 advantage.

Dickinson made seven saves in the contest. Lardner led all players with six shots, one of those on frame. Montgomery landed four of her five shots on goal.

Villanova embarks on its final road stint of the regular season as it heads to Providence for a Sunday matinee. That game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
