VILLANOVA, Pa. – Undefeated UConn posted a 3-0 victory over Villanova in a BIG EAST Men's Soccer game played Friday afternoon at the Higgins Soccer Complex.
"We have some good moments in games but as a team we came up short at a couple of key points, especially in our own box," stated Villanova head coach Mark Fetrow. "An opponent of UConn's quality will make you pay for those moments, and they did that today."
The Huskies (7-0-3 overall, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) put the Wildcats(0-6-4 overall, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) Â into an early hole. Eli Conway and Kieran Chandler fed passes that led to a goal in tight by Scott Testori at 11:08 to make it 1-0 in favor of UConn.
A set piece led to UConn's second goal.
Charlie Holmes sent a throw in towards the box that found Jack Loura. Loura fed Nicolas Tomerius who registered his first goal of 2024 to push the margin to 2-0.
That's where it stood after 45 minutes.
"There were some things I didn't like in the first half from our team," said Fetrow. "We talked at halftime about this being a character game, being down two goals at halftime. I don't think we did enough in the second half to change that narrative."
UConn added a third goal at 63:30 as Holmes finished a play set up by Chandler.
"Credit to UConn," said Fetrow. "They were efficient and forced us to chase the game from early in the game."
Sebastian Cutler DeJesus made five saves on the day in goal for the Wildcats. Jason Bouregy had four of Villanova's seven shots with two of those on frame.
"We've got a lot to continue to work on," Fetrow said. "We'll get back to work so that we're ready for Columbia."
Next the Wildcats will prepare for a non-conference match Tuesday against Columbia (3 p.m./Flo Sports).
