VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova University men's tennis team wrapped up its fall season over the weekend (Nov. 1-Nov. 3) at the Dragon Invitational hosted at Drexel University's Vitas Tennis Courts and the Villanova Tennis Complex. The Wildcats competed in three rounds of dual-style matches against Delaware, Fairleigh Dickinson and NJIT.
On Friday (Nov. 1) against Delaware, the Wildcats dropped all 12 matches to Delaware. Seven of Villanova's eight singles flights fell in straight sets, while
Josh Vestal lost in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 6-7 (10), 10-1. The Blue and White were swept in doubles competition as well, although
Will Monahan and Vestal forced a tiebreaker against Delaware's Marliz and Slater and eventually lost, 7-6 (4).
The next day (Nov. 2), the Wildcats squared off against Fairleigh Dickinson, going 4-3 in singles play and 1-3 in doubles. In the first flight, Monahan captured a three-set win over FDU's Griffyn Minor, 5-7, 7-6 (7), 10-5. Freshmen
Cameron Kruep,
Jack Sherner and
Evan Ancu each won in the fourth, sixth and seventh flights, respectively.
Cooper Gordon and
Quincy Jones fell in third set tiebreakers, while
Kush Anand lost in straight sets.
In doubles competition, Anand and Gordon, Kruep and Jones, and Monahan and Vestal lost in the top three flights, while Ancu and Sherner picked up a win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
On the final day of competition (Nov. 3), the Wildcats dropped all five singles matches to NJIT and went 1-2 in doubles. Gordon, Ancu and Vestal lost in third-set tiebreakers, while Anand and Jones fell in straight sets. In doubles, Anand/Gordon and Kruep/Vestal lost in the top two flights, while Ancu/Sherner earned a 6-2 victory in the third flight.
The event concluded the fall season for the Wildcats. Up next, Villanova will begin its dual season in the spring. The schedule is still to be announced.
