VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova (3-2) takes on No. 13 Penn (3-2) this Saturday in the third annual Farrell Cup. The Wildcats took last year's meeting 9-8 on a game winning goal by
Matt Licata in the final seconds at Franklin Field.
Villanova is riding a three-game win streak thanks to a heroic comeback win over Drexel on Tuesday night.
Tyler Boes tied the game with nine seconds remaining and Holy Cross transfer
Thomas McIntire won it in double overtime. Licata and
Colin Michener each recorded hat tricks and
Mason Reale racked up five points in the win.
Penn is fresh off a road trip in North Carolina where they defeated No. 1 Duke and lost to No. 19 North Carolina. The Quakers have faced top quality competition with their other loss coming to No. 13 Georgetown.
Both sides are well rounded in attack with four players having 10 or more points on the season. The Wildcat defense will be tasked with slowing down junior Tynan Walsh, who leads the Quakers with 10 goals and nine assists this season. Penn ranks 13th in the nation with only 14 turnovers per game while the Wildcats cause the 13th most turnovers per game with 10.
The Farrell Cup is played in honor of James (Penn '18) and Michael (Villanova '23) Farrell, who were tragically killed in a car accident in 2021. James played four years of collegiate lacrosse at Penn and was the team captain in 2018 while Michael was a Villanova School of Business student and was the team captain of Villanova's club lacrosse team.
The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
