Long Ball Lifts Wildcats Over Gaels 9-8

PLYMOUTH MEETING– Villanova and Iona combined for six home runs at Villanova Ballpark.  The Wildcats prevailed in game two, winning 9-8.

Home runs seem to be a theme for The Wildcats in this series as Jason Neff hit a two-run blast in the second inning for his second of the series.  Villanova added another in the third inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

Iona, however, did not take long to respond.  In the fourth, a solo home run by Josiah Ragsdale and a three-run shot from Anothny Febo, gave The Gaels the 4-3 lead.

Villanova did not let Iona hold that lead for long.  In the bottom of the fourth, Shane Solari sent a ball over the fence in left field to reclaim the lead for The Wildcats, 5-4.

The back-and-forth home runs continued as The Gaels tied the game at five from a solo shot in the top of the fifth. Scott Shaw answered with a two-run home run into right field to retake the lead, 7-5 in the bottom of the inning.

John Whooley kept the inning going with a two-RBI single that turned into a double after an error by the right fielder.  This grew the lead to the largest of the day for Villanova at 9-5.

The Gaels did not go away easy as the team added two more in the sixth.  Carson Cahoy hit an RBI double, and Jayson Gonzalez hit a sac fly to give Iona those two runs.

A scoreless seventh for both teams brought us to the eighth where a wild pitch scored Nickolas Mora to bring the lead to just one for Villanova.

Strong pitching to end the game by Patrick Montfort closed the game out for The Wildcats, taking the 9-8 victory.
