SANTRY, Dublin, Ireland—It was a pair of Villanova runners who finished in the top eight of the men's 1500 meter final at the 152
nd National Senior Championships at Morton Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Charlie O'Donovan tallied a fifth place finish with a time of 3:45.25 and
Sean Donoghue came in eighth in 3:46.29. Both runners qualified for Sunday's final out of the same heat a day earlier.
O'Donovan paced a crowded field of 16 runners through most of the first 800 meters before settling in just off the lead pack over the final two laps. Four competitors broke away from the field coming down the home stretch while O'Donovan led the chase pack. It is the third time in the last four years that O'Donovan has tallied a top-five finish in the 1500 meters at the National Senior Championships. Donoghue competed at the championships for the first time since 2021 when he had been 13
th in the final of the 1500 meters in the summer before beginning his collegiate career.
Both runners have been busy since the end of the collegiate season earlier this month. O'Donovan wrapped up his Villanova career at the outdoor NCAA Championships on June 5 in Eugene, Oregon before heading overseas to prepare for this weekend's Irish championships. He posted a time of 3:42.29 in the 1500 meters on June 15 in Belgium and recorded a time of 3:42.52 on June 20 in Poland.
Donoghue, a 2023 qualifier for the NCAA Championships, ended his collegiate season with his third straight appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary in Lexington, Kentucky on May 22. He raced in the 1500 meters on June 22 in Portugal and tallied a time of 3:43.10. Donoghue has remaining collegiate eligibility in all three seasons (cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field).
