Saturday Scuffle Ends As Volleyball Loss to No. 13 Creighton

Alyssa Nelson notches 1,000 career assists in the match after 15-helper effort against Bluejays

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova volleyball dropped its second match of BIG EAST play on Saturday evening, falling to the No. 13 Creighton Bluejays in straight sets (8-25, 15-25, 23-25) at Jake Nevin Field House.

Reagan McGivern led the way for Villanova (13-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) in her first career Top 25 matchup, totaling seven kills on .417 hitting.

Alyssa Nelson reached 1,000 career assists with her 15-helper performance on the evening, achieving the mark despite only being a sophomore and splitting time in a 6-2 offense.

Abby Harrell added seven kills and a game-best eight digs in the match for the Wildcats and Ava Harris pitched in a 13-assist, four-dig effort.

"It wasn't our best performance tonight," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Creighton has a really good team and they have a ton of ways to score. We'll have to get better to be able to compete with a team like that."

The Bluejays used a trio of big runs to dominate the first with one 6-0, a 7-1 and another 7-0 stretch allowing the visitors to capture the opener 25-8.

It was a much more even start to the second period at the Jake Nevin Field House with Villanova keeping it within one up through 12-11, but CU generated some distance and closed the frame on seven straight for a 25-15 win.

Villanova used a 7-1 run to grab a two-point lead midway through the third and force Creighton's first timeout of the match, though the nation's No. 13 squad re-grouped and grabbed a three-point lead back. VU battled back into it and tied the tally at both 22 and 23-all, but CU grabbed the two scores necessary to finish the set as a 25-23 visitor victory for a sweep.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats head up to New England for a weekend of action, visiting Providence and Connecticut next Friday and Saturday night respectively.
