A crucial stretch of games that could determine Villanova's postseason destiny kick off this week for the Wildcats as they host Marquette on Wednesday afternoon before heading to UConn on Saturday night.
Villanova (8-5, 3-2 BIG EAST) has five matches left in the regular season with each of the next three being against teams that are with them in the top four. The Wildcats are currently tied for fourth with Marquette (6-3-4, 2-0-3 BIG EAST) with nine points. Two points ahead of the pair sits UConn (7-3-3, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) in third with 11 points. Villanova is looking to make its first appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament since 2019 with the top four teams in the conference standings earning spots this season.
The Wildcats head into the week with back-to-back 1-0 wins over DePaul and St. John's, pushing them to seven shutouts this season. One more would match the 2019 team's eight-shutout mark, the most since the 2007 team rattled off 11 shutouts. They also have a chance of reaching double-digit wins for the first time since 2019.
Wednesday's meeting with Marquette is the 16th overall in the series with Villanova trailing 3-11-1. Last year saw a 3-0 win for the 'Cats in Milwaukee. They have not seen a home win in the series since 2018. Marquette brings a strong offensive presence in the matchup, including being the third-best team among conference sides with a 2.00 scoring offense, 14.00 shots per game and 6.85 shots on goal per game.
Saturday marks the 29th meeting between Villanova and UConn with the ‘Cats trailing 2-19-7 all-time. Villanova has gone 0-5-4 since their last win in the series back in 2006. Last year’s meeting between the two sides was a 0-0 draw on the Main Line.
