Baseball Drops Series Opener to Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Villanova University baseball team fell to Lipscomb, 8-0, in the first of a three-game series on Friday afternoon (Feb. 28) at Ken Dugan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After Villanova (4-4) starting pitcher Bobby Olsen struck out the side in the first inning, the Wildcats (4-4) fell behind in the bottom half of the second inning after an RBI single by Lipscomb's Parks Bouck. Then, the Bisons (3-6) tacked on four more runs after tallying five hits in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats threatened by putting runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings but came up short on both opportunities.

Reliever Graham Moore replaced Olsen in the bottom of the sixth, who got through the inning after giving up one run and one hit. Lipscomb led after six innings, 6-0.

In the eighth inning, the Bisons tacked on two more runs, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI triple against JP Podgorski.

The Wildcats were unable to score a run in the top of the ninth, securing the 8-0 win for Lipscomb.

Despite throwing eight strikeouts, Olsen received the loss, moving his record to 1-1 on the season. Jake Poindexter was credited with the win for the Bisons, improving to 1-1.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Olsen's eight strikeouts tie a season high. He has now thrown seven-or-more strikeouts in three straight games, becoming the first Wildcat to do so since Gordon Graceffo in 2021.
  • A single by Austin Lemon in the top of the seventh inning extended his season-opening hitting streak to eight games.
  • After hitting a double in the top of the first, third baseman Michael Whooley has now logged an extra base hit in five straight games.
