Villanova Drops Game Two to NJIT

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova University baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game series against NJIT, 13-3, in seven innings on Saturday afternoon (March 15) at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Highlanders (8-9) delivered the first blow with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Then, after two singles and a walk following the home run loaded the bases, catcher Mason Wolf hit a grand slam, giving NJIT a 5-0 lead.

NJIT tacked on another run behind a solo homer by Austin Francis in the top of the third inning, extending its lead to six runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats (9-7) began to claw back, using four hits – including a leadoff triple by Michael Whooley – to score three runs and cut their deficit in half.

However, the Highlanders answered right back in the top of the fifth. NJIT scored four runs to firmly regain control of the game with a 10-3 lead.

The Highlanders scored three more runs behind an RBI single in the sixth and a two-run home run in the seventh to take a 10-run lead. When Villanova was held scoreless in the seventh, the game was ended with final score of 13-3 in favor of NJIT.

NJIT starter MT Morrissey was dominant in the late innings, retiring nine of his last 10 batters faced to keep the Villanova offense at bay.

Morrissey earned the win to improve to 2-1, while Wildcats starter CJ Furey fell to 0-1 with the loss.
