Villanova Falls at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – The Villanova University baseball team dropped a road matchup at Butler, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Park.

For the first time in over 10 seasons, the Wildcats (18-14, 3-2 BIG EAST) recorded at least 11 hits in four consecutive games. Freshman John Freitag tied a career-high with three base knocks on the day, while outfielder JoJo Montgomery hit a pair of singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jake Francis and Butler starter Marcus Goodpaster were both in control on the mound to start the game, holding both teams scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Then, Butler (12-22, 1-4 BIG EAST) used a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Butler tacked on three more runs behind an RBI double, a balk by Francis and an ensuing RBI single.

The Wildcats threatened with runners on first and second and one out in both the fifth and eighth innings but were unable to capitalize on either opportunity.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs hit a sacrifice fly followed by a two-run base it to extend their lead to seven runs. Connor Hale led off the ninth with a walk for the 'Cats, but Villanova immediately grounded into a double play and struck out to end the game.

Goodpaster improved to 3-2 with the win, while Francis fell to 5-1 with the loss.
