PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova University baseball team tied a season-high by drawing 15 walks as it defeated Bucknell, 11-1, in seven innings on Tuesday (April 22) at Villanova Ballpark.
At the plate, freshman
JoJo Montgomery led the way with two hits and a career-best three RBI. The Wildcats (20-17) posted eight hits to go with their impressive walk total.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Montgomery hit a triple to score
Josue Valdez and give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. Villanova tacked on two more runs in the third behind an RBI single by
Jason Neff and an RBI groundout by
John Freitag.
Bucknell (14-25) posted its first hit of the game with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, cutting the VU lead to 3-1. However, the Wildcats answered in the bottom half of the inning by scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman relief pitcher
Luke Jacobson struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning, opening the door for Villanova to extend its lead to seven runs in the bottom of the frame. A sacrifice bunt by
Connor Hale and an RBI single by
Brayden Leonard each scored a run. Then, with runners on second and third, Montgomery drove a line drive into center field to put two more runs on the board, giving the 'Cats an 8-1 advantage.
A wild pitch, an RBI single by Neff, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Leonard scored the three remaining runs needed to reach the 10-run rule in the seventh, securing the 11-1 win for Villanova.
Reliever
Stephen Turzai picked up his first win of the season after throwing two scoreless innings with no hits allowed. Bucknell starter Brady Swenson fell to 1-1 with the loss.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Montgomery's RBI triple in the bottom of the second was the first extra-base hit of his career. The freshman had 25 singles prior to his two-hit performance against the Bison.
- Michael Whooley and Leonard each drew three walks, tying a season-high for any Villanova player this year.
- Whooley currently has a 17-game on-base streak, the second longest by any Wildcat this season.
