Wildcats Drop 12-Inning Marathon to Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite two stellar pitching performances from Luke McCollough and Alec Sachais, the Villanova University baseball team dropped its series opener to Creighton, 3-2, in 12 innings on Friday night (April 25) at Charles Schwab Field. The game was Villanova's first extra-inning bout of the 2025 season.
 
McCollough started the game for Villanova (20-18, 4-6 BIG EAST), going 6.1 innings with only four hits and two runs (one earned) allowed. He struck out four on the night while only issuing one walk. Sachais filled in for McCollough in the seventh and pitched five hitless innings before giving up a pair of hits and the game-winning run. He tied a career-high
 
At the plate, the Wildcats were led by Jason Neff, who went 3-for-5 with a two-run double in the fourth which accounted for Villanova's only two runs. Austin Lemon and Tyler Shaw each posted multi-hit games in the loss.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bluejays (26-12, 7-3 BIG EAST) struck first with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. McCollough recovered with a six-pitch, 1-2-3 third inning.
 
The strong inning allowed Villanova to respond with four hits and two runs in the top of the fourth. After back-to-back base hits by Austin Lemon and Michael Whooley, Neff drove a two-run double down the left field line to score both baserunners.
 
Creighton answered in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game at two runs apiece with a solo home run by Will MacLean.
 
McCollough held the Bluejays in check in the fifth and sixth innings. He exited the game with runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Alec Sachais filled in on the mound and got the Wildcats out of the jam, forcing a groundout and pop out to keep the score tied, 2-2.
 
Sachais shut down Creighton deep into extras, holding the 'Jays hitless until the 12th inning. A double by Connor Capece and a two-out single by Kyle Hess scored the winning run for CU, with a final score of 3-2. Sachais fell to 4-4 with the loss, while Creighton reliever Garrett Langrell improved to 5-1 with the win.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Neff recorded his 50th RBI of the season, making him the 21st Wildcat to reach the half century mark in a single season.
  • Sachais has posted five-or-more strikeouts in four games this season.
  • The Wildcats now have five everyday starters batting over .300: Lemon (.339), Leonard (.336), Whooley (.317), Neff (.307) and Freitag (.300).
