PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Senior
Josue Valdez hit a home run in his second straight game as the Villanova University baseball team fell to Seton Hall, 9-3, on Friday afternoon (May 16) at Villanova Ballpark.
Valdez's solo home run in the fourth inning was his fourth of the season. He becomes the third Villanova player to hit a home run in consecutive games this season, joining
Michael Whooley and
Jason Neff.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first,
JoJo Montgomery got the Wildcats (22-27, 6-14 BIG EAST) on the board with an infield single on a ground ball that slowly found the space between pitcher and the second baseman. The second baseman's late throw was errant, allowing two runs to eventually score.
The Pirates (23-30, 9-11 BIG EAST) answered in the top of the second with a two-run home run, tying the game at two runs apiece.
After a scoreless third inning, Valdez's home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth gave the lead back to Villanova.
However, Seton Hall answered once again with a three-run top of the fifth, taking a 5-3 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Pirates added pairs of runs in the sixth and eighth innings, while the Wildcats were limited to just one hit beyond the fifth frame, sealing the 9-3 win for Seton Hall.
Seton Hall reliever Stephen Curry improved to 5-3 with the win, while Villanova starter
Jake Francis fell to 5-5 with the loss. John Downing earned his fourth save of the season for the Pirates after closing the game with three strong innings out of the bullpen.
BY THE NUMBERS
- With three walks, Whooley extended his on-base streak to 29 games, the longest in Villanova history since 2006 (Jeremy Hunt, 33 games).
- Bobby Olsen struck out seven while pitching four innings in relief. Olsen has a team-high six games with six-or-more strikeouts this season.
