Wildcats Claim Series with 11–6 Rubber Match Win

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova University baseball team secured the weekend series with an 11–6 victory over UNC Asheville in the rubber match on Sunday, March 22, at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth Meeting.

BACK-AND-FORTH START
UNC Asheville struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on early traffic to plate a run.

Villanova answered immediately in the bottom half. Austin Lemon worked a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI double from senior Michael Whooley, evening the game at 1–1 after one inning.

FOUR-RUN THIRD

Later in the inning, senior Collin Quintano delivered the big swing, driving a bases-clearing double into the left-center gap to cap the four-run inning and extend the lead.

ADDING ON

BULLDOGS PUSH BACK
UNC Asheville made things interesting in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to cut into the deficit. The Bulldogs capitalized on free passes and miscues to trim the Villanova lead to 6–4.

The Bulldogs added another run in the seventh to make it a one-run game, putting pressure back on the Wildcats.

SIXTH-INNING RESPONSE
Villanova delivered the decisive response in the bottom of the sixth, erupting for five runs to regain control.

Larry Hotaling got things started with a double, and Montgomery followed with an RBI single to center field. The Wildcats continued to string together quality at-bats, as Whooley lined an RBI single to bring home another run.

With the bases loaded, John Freitag delivered the biggest swing of the day, clearing the bases with a three-run double to right field to break the game open.
