PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Villanova opened the outdoor track & field season with several strong performances in the sprints and throws at the Penn Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The contingent of Wildcats at the meet competed in the 400 meters on the track as well as the long jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin at Franklin Field.
Freshman
Ty Hoffmann made his collegiate debut in the 400 meters and came in fourth out of 16 competitors with a time of 49.32. He was followed by junior
Matthew Griffin (Whippany, N.J.) in fifth place and freshman
Christos Batalias (New York, N.Y.) in ninth as they recorded times of 49.35 and 49.73, respectively.
In the throwing events, the top finish for the Wildcats came in the hammer where graduate student
Tristan Bolinsky (Gordon, Pa.) finished fourth with a throw of 56.88 meters. Bolinsky added a fifth place finish in the discus with a mark of 46.85 meters. Freshman thrower
Yianni Papanikolas (Toms River, N.J.) came in fifth in the shot put with a throw of 16.03 meters.
As the outdoor season ramps up, Villanova will compete at both the Raleigh Relays and the Danny Curran Invitational during the coming week.
