PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Two first-year field athletes impacted Villanova's all-time top 10 lists in their respective events and several of the team's distance runners recorded personal bests in the Wildcats outdoor season opener at the Penn Challenge on Saturday afternoon. Freshman long jumper
Mariana Lopez del Valle (Tampa, Fla.) recorded a PR of 5.56 meters and
Jane Carey (Webster, N.Y.) threw 47.79 meters in the hammer.
Lopez del Valle moves into 10
th place on the program's all-time outdoor performance list in the long jump and becomes the seventh athlete in the last 10 years to leap their way onto the outdoor top 10. The duo of Carey and freshman
Kiera Christensen (Alexandria, Minn.) rank ninth and 11
th on the all-time Villanova performance list in the hammer after competing in the event for the first time in their collegiate careers. Carey slides onto that list in ninth place and Christensen is 11
th after a throw of 46.04 meters.
Among the other field events for the Wildcats in Saturday's meet at Franklin Field, freshman thrower
Jess Bentum (Deptford, N.J.) came in second in the shot put with a mark of 11.55 meters and classmate
Hallie Kees (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) made her collegiate debut with a third place finish in the javelin and a distance of 39.66 meters.
On the track, freshman
Sophia McInnes (Bayport, N.Y.) paced a field of 22 runners in the 1500 meters with a winning time of 4:28.49. She also finished with a time of 59.73 in the 400 meters. First year middle distance runner
Gabby Pistner (St. Marys, Pa.) won the 800 meters in 2:11.43. There were four Villanova runners in the top seven of that race, including
Maeve Smith (Ocean City, N.J.) with a time of 2:17.06,
Zoe Mosher (Pleasantville, N.S.) who crossed the line in 2:17.65, and
Cecilia Montagnese (Leetsdale, Pa.) with a time of 2:18.28.
Mosher was the runner-up to McInnes in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:29.95. Smith (4:32.65) and Pistner (4:33.09) placed fourth and fifth in that race, while Montagnese (4:38.22) was eighth and junior
Therese Trainer (Havertown, Pa.) 10
th (4:42.89).
As the outdoor season continues to get into full swing, the Wildcats will have competition during the coming week at the Raleigh Relays and the Danny Curran Invitational.
