Rowing Traverses to Florida for Spring-Opening Scrimmages

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Villanova Rowing wrapped up its annual Spring Break training trip in Florida over the weekend, spending two days racing against Jacksonville and Holy Cross.

The trip to the Sunshine State was marked by moments of growth and resiliency both on and off the water.

"Our spring training trip proved to be both productive and memorable," head coach Carissa Adams said. "First and foremost, we are incredibly grateful to the Lake County Rowing Association, who stepped in to host us just six days before our arrival. Their flexibility and support were instrumental in making our trip a success."

The Wildcats anticipated training on Newnan's Lake in Gainsville during the week but extremely low water levels due to a severe draught forced a last-minute venue change. This shakeup gave the team a chance to lean into adaptability as it faced a new training environment.

"One of the defining elements of the week was our athletes' attitude. They demonstrated exceptional flexibility as plans shifted, showing a willingness to embrace whatever challenges the day presented. Their work ethic was evident from the first stroke of the trip—they attacked every session with intent, resilience, and a genuine eagerness to elevate the program. The group continually pushed one another, responded positively to feedback, and leaned into the discomfort required to improve. Their collective mindset set a strong tone for the season ahead."

Despite the change in venue, the 'Cats took to the water numerous times throughout the week before facing Jacksonville and Holy Cross on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

"Friday's high winds required us to relocate our annual scrimmage with Jacksonville to a more protected body of water," Adams said. "Even with the change in plan, it was exciting to go head‑to‑head with Jacksonville and get an early assessment of where we stand. I was extremely proud of how our athletes responded to the conditions and embraced the adjustments. They put forward strong, competitive efforts against a tough opponent."

Saturday's finale with Holy Cross was a productive one for the sides as they raced in a series of pieces of varying lengths for side-by-side racing.

"It was a valuable opportunity to line up against another strong program and continue building speed as we head into the spring season," Adams said.

Villanova has one more scrimmage on its early spring slate before diving into regatta action. That scrimmage will take the Wildcats to Allentown, Pa. to meet with Lehigh on March 21.
