Men's and Women's squads to meet Notre Dame in Rome doubleheader

VILLANOVA, Pa. (April 17, 2026) — Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame will meet in Rome, Italy, in November 2026 for a unique celebration of the institutions' shared Catholic missions and heritage. The jointly hosted event will feature a men's and women's basketball doubleheader, along with special programming that brings together academics, athletics and spirituality.

"This extraordinary experience reflects the very best of Villanova's Augustinian Catholic mission—uniting faith, learning and community in a global setting," said University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD.  "From academic engagement and cultural immersion to shared worship and athletics, this journey offers a profound opportunity to grow in mind, body and spirit."

Inspired by the recent election of Pope Leo XIV—an Augustinian friar and Villanova alumnus—student-athletes from both institutions will open the 2026–27 NCAA basketball season with a marquee men's and women's doubleheader on November 1, 2026. The men's game will air nationally on FOX at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by the women on FS1 at 12 p.m. ET. The games will mark a unique intersection of global sport and shared mission, set against the backdrop of one of the world's most historic cities.

"This is a special opportunity for our players and coaches to be part of a global event," said William B. Finneran Endowed Head Men's Basketball Coach Kevin Willard. "To represent Villanova in Rome to open our 2026-27 season is such a great honor. We appreciate the enormous effort that's gone into making it possible."

"We're thrilled to tip off our 2026-27 season with this incredible event in Rome against a nationally recognized Notre Dame team," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Denise Dillon. "This is an opportunity to showcase high level basketball, while celebrating our University and its Augustinian mission. This event will create lasting memories for our student-athletes and staff."

This distinctive event reflects the very heart of Catholic higher education—bringing faith and learning into dialogue in a setting of profound historical and spiritual significance—connecting our schools and our communities. This experience offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our shared mission and the ways in which education can form the whole person.

The Italian excursion will begin with a stunning welcome reception overlooking Rome. Attendees will also have the opportunity for a shared Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, and a planned papal audience with Pope Leo XIV in advance of the games.

The itinerary will also be enriched with immersive cultural and academic experiences—including private Vatican Museum tours, thoughtfully curated programming and optional excursions before and after the main events. The journey is designed to reflect and elevate the institutions' shared Catholic missions—exploring the theme of sports and spirituality and its impact on our world.
