Last Road Game Sends Villanova to Milwaukee for Saturday Matchup at Marquette

Winner of this game clinches a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament hosted by Providence

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – It's a critical BIG EAST contest out in the Midwest this weekend as Villanova men's lacrosse (5-6, 2-1 BIG EAST) takes on the Marquette Golden Eagles at Valley Fields on Saturday afternoon with whoever wins the game clinching a berth in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament.

FELL TO THE FRIARS
Villanova suffered its first overtime loss of the season on Saturday, falling 10-9 to Providence. It was Senior Day on the Main Line, honoring the program's 13 seniors (12 players and a manager) in a pregame ceremony. The Wildcats started out the game on a three-goal run, leading 3-1 after one. It was a low-scoring second quarter where the only tallies came from Luke Raymond, scoring twice for a 5-1 Wildcat lead heading into the second half. The Friars opened up the third period with a pair of goals before two VU tallies gave the 'Cats a 7-3 advantage 45 minutes into the game. Providence began the fourth with a tally before David Evanchick scored the first goal of his career, but the visitors got the next three and made it a one-goal game. It looked like David Link's third goal of the day may ice it, but PC again drew back within one then got the game-tying tally at 45 seconds to force overtime. George Glomb won the opening faceoff of overtime, but the Friars cashed in after a VU turnover to steal a 10-9 win.

MATCHUPS AGAINST MARQUETTE
This weekend's matchup sends the Wildcats to the Midwest for the first time this season, the only occasion of the year to this point where the 'Cats have to hop on a plane. Villanova has won nine in a row over the Golden Eagles dating all the way back to 2017 as MU's last win vs. the 'Cats came in May of 2016. Two out of the last three in the series have been one-goal games, including three VU goals in the final minute for a 14-13 victory in 2025 while 2023 needed an overtime score for a 16-15 'Cats win. The last meeting in Milwaukee was a 2024 Wildcat win with two points from each of Link, Nick Lucchesi, Dan Martin and Colin Michener to secure a postseason berth for Villanova with a 12-6 victory. MU's only wins in the series were three straight from March of 2015 through 2016's two contests, otherwise it's been all 'Cats.

TIES BETWEEN THE TWO
There are several Wildcats who share alma maters with some Marquette players, including Joe Bogle and Eddie Jones (Episcopal Academy with Luke Montanye), Quinton Cepiel and Tate Seeman (Deerfield Academy like Connor Coutu), Dan and Ryan Martin (Christian Brothers Academy with Andrew Kohlbrenner), Nate Macpherson (Loomis Chaffee with Colin Sim) and Ryan Welgos (Georgetown Prep with Jack Kask). The Golden Eagles have a number of players from the Greater Philadelphia area, including Justin Daubert (Owen J. Roberts grad), Peter Detwiler (Conestoga grad), Zach Hulme (Kennett Square native), Montanye (Wayne native) and Jacob Nottoli (Lancaster County native), while Matt Hamill is from Canada but went to the Westtown School in West Chester. Three of the MU coaches played against Villanova in their playing days as Golden Eagles, and head coach Jake Richard grew up in West Chester.
