VILLANOVA, Pa. – It took 76 minutes of a scoreless battle for Villanova to break through and create the distance it needed to defeat Penn, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex.
Villanova (4-0-1) improves its streak of shutouts to five straight on the year. Since last season, the Wildcats have not allowed a goal in 547 minutes of action, including a scoreless draw to end the 2025 campaign. The win is also the third straight for the Blue and White in its series with Penn (1-3-1), extending its unbeaten streak against the Quakers to five consecutive matches.
Avrie Nelsen continued her scoring blitz that she has been on over the past week, netting a goal for a third consecutive game. The sophomore striker is up to a team-high five goals on the year, already matching her season total from last year. On the other side of the pitch, Villanova's defensive unit held the Quakers without a shot on goal.
"In all fairness, I think Penn was certainly better than us in the first half," head coach
Samar Azem said. "They did a great job in exploiting certain aspects of our shape. They were tougher than us. They were first to second balls, first balls; they pressed us really well. The counter pressed us really well. We never really got our rhythm and I give them credit for that. In the second half, our team did a phenomenal job of turning the switch."
Villanova's best chance of scoring in the first half was in the 36
th minute as the 'Cats were awarded their third penalty kick of the season after a foul in the box.
Gabby Koluch lined up for the chance but Penn's Ria Desai had the dead-on save that she fell on to keep the game scoreless in her first collegiate start.
Through the opening 45 minutes, Villanova peppered eight shots with four landing on frame. Koluch had a pair of chances but both were gobbled up by Desai.
Penn saw a couple of set pieces in the 50
th and 58
th minutes that
Hannah Dickinson got air on to grab and keep the contest level.
Villanova's breakthrough came from Nelsen in the 77
th minute.
Isabelle Chukwu was able to get the ball away from Penn's Mia Fuss and played a brilliant pass into the box for a darting Nelsen to find. She sent her chance from near the penalty spot and past a diving Desai into the back left of the net for a 1-0.
The Quakers continued to press late into the contest and found a chance to knot the game at one apiece in the 86
th minute. Casey Forman took the free kick for Penn from well outside of the 18 yard box, but Dickinson was once again on guard, launching into the air to grab the ball and keep the lead in place for the 'Cats. The clean sheet brings the graduate netminder to three solo shutouts on the year and 17 in her time as a Wildcat, tying her for fourth in program history with Lynn McHale (1984-87).
Villanova outshot Penn 14-7 on the day, 6-0 for shots on goal. Koluch and
Morgan Kotch led the Wildcats with three shots each.
It will be another week until the 'Cats get back in action to continue this six-match swing of home games. They host Bucknell on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. inside Higgins Soccer Complex.
