Following its first losses of the year this past week in a pair of BIG EAST road trips, Villanova (4-2-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) returns home this weekend looking to get back on track as it hosts Butler (5-4-3, 1-0-2 BIG EAST) Thursday and Creighton (2-6-4, 0-4 BIG EAST) Sunday.
Fans who cannot attend the games can watch live via the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. Soaking rain forced last Sunday's previously scheduled UNITAS game to be moved to this Thursday. The Wildcats will wear UNITAS in Athletics shirts for warm-ups before representatives from each of the seven student-athlete ally and affinity groups will be honored at halftime.
Villanova currently sits tied for eighth in the conference standings with three points through its first three league tilts. The group fell to nationally-ranked Xavier last Thursday, 1-0, before falling to St. John's on Sunday, 2-0, snapping a nine-game unbeaten streak to open the year and a 12-game unbeaten run that stretched back to last season. The loss to the Johnnies marked the first time in 2023 that the Wildcats allowed more than one goal in a contest. Their eight goals allowed on the year are tied for fourth-fewest in the BIG EAST.
The Wildcats are is in the middle of a stretch of BIG EAST contests where they are taking on the top five teams in the league’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll. This past week, the ‘Cats dropped games against Xavier and St. John’s, two sides that were projected to finish second and third this season. Butler and Creighton, this week’s opponents, were fourth and fifth, respectively. Next Thursday brings a trip to Washington, D.C. to take on reigning BIG EAST Champion Georgetown.
Butler comes into the contest with a week off since a 1-1 draw with Providence on Sept. 28. The Bulldogs bring a six-game unbeaten streak to the Main Line this season, going 3-0-3 in that stretch. They are sixth in the BIG EAST with five points on a 1-0-2 record. They have scored 55 points so far this season, the fourth-most in the BIG EAST. When it comes to shooting, Butler has built a sizable 159-99 advantage. Its 13.25 shots per game are fourth-most in the BIG EAST.
The first two weeks of the BIG EAST season have come without a win for Creighton, falling in each of its four matchups in that time. As of Oct. 1, Creighton and DePaul are the only BIG EAST sides without a win in conference action. The Bluejays have been outscored 9-2 in league contests this season. They finished out their non-conference slate with a pair of wins over North Dakota State, 3-2, and South Dakota State, 1-0. The Bluejays have been outscored by their opponents 22-12 through the first 12 games of the season. They are second in the BIG EAST with 4.42 saves per game as a unit. Offensively, the group has the third-best shot accuracy clip at .464.
