Mark Carberry begins his second season as a member of the Villanova coaching staff in 2014-15. Carberry is an assistant coach for both the men's cross country and men's track & field squads and is heavily involved in all aspects of the daily operations of the Wildcats program.

As a graduate of Villanova and a former Wildcats student-athlete himself, Carberry is a natural fit to mentor the current members of the Wildcats roster. He returned to his alma mater in 2013 after spending three years as the associate head coach at St. Mary's (Calif.).

Last year Carberry was a part of a Villanova staff which guided the Wildcats to a BIG EAST "triple crown" with championships in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. It was the first time in program history that Villanova accomplished this feat and the team received BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors in all three seasons. At both the indoor and outdoor conference meets the Wildcats set championship records for having the highest team score in the 35-year history of the conference. Villanova won seven events at the indoor BIG EAST meet and six events outdoors.

Individual success during the 2013-14 academic year brought the Wildcats a total of 13 All-America honors, including seven for the indoor track & field season, four outdoor honors and two in cross country. Freshman sensation Patrick Tiernan was a cross country All-American and then went on to receive first team All-America honors in the 5000 meters both indoors and outdoors. Villanova qualified three individuals and its distance medley relay squad for the indoor NCAA Championships and sent four athletes to the outdoor national meet.

While racking up team and individual honors in competition the Wildcats also enjoyed an equal amount of success academically. Villanova had 34 student-athletes named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, with five of those team members also receiving United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic mention.

During his three years at St. Mary's, Carberry oversaw all of the Gaels recruiting efforts as well as the development of both the men's cross country and track & field programs during his time at St. Mary's.

The men's cross country team at St. Mary's set multiple school records during Carberry's tenure, with All-West Coast Conference first team honoree Rajpaul Pannu establishing new school marks on both 8,000 and 10,000 meter courses during the 2012 season. Pannu earned USTFCCCA All-West honors in 2012, while Nick Ellingson and Zach Hansen set the sophomore and freshman class records at both distances. As a team, the Gaels finished in sixth place at the WCC championships, their best finish in over a decade.

Prior to his stint at St. Mary's, Carberry was the top assistant coach and the co-director of recruiting for the men's cross country and track & field program at Tufts. He was responsible for recruiting and coaching the middle distance and distance runners at Tufts and was the primary coach for eight NCAA Division III All-Americans and a total of 15 national qualifiers. During the 2010 outdoor season Jesse Faller recorded the fastest 5,000 meters time in the country.

As a collegiate student-athlete Carberry was a four-year member of the Villanova cross country and track & field teams. He earned All-BIG EAST honors as a member of the Wildcats 4x800 meter relay as both a junior and a senior, as well as individually in the 1000 meters his senior year.

Carberry graduated from Villanova in 2004 with a degree in Political Science and Economics. He went on to receive a Master's degree in Political Science from Florida State in 2008 and a Master's in Educational Studies with an emphasis on Physical Education and Coaching Development from Tufts in 2010. Carberry holds a USATF Level 1 coaching certification.
