Wildcats Overpower Georgetown in Field Hockey

Oct. 27, 1999

Villanova, Pa.- Junior Nicole DiMaggio (West Chester, Pa.) scored a pair of goals in the game's first 12 minutes as Villanova cruised to a non-conference victory over Georgetown on Wednesday evening at Villanova Stadium.

Villanova jumped into the lead when DiMaggio took a feed from sophomore Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) at the 30:51 mark of the first half. She then scored her second of the night just seven minutes later to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

DiMaggio's second goal was important in another respect too. It was Villanova's 63rd goal of the 1999 campaign. That breaks the school record set last year (62). Katie Craig (Rydal, Pa.) received an assist on the goal.

Senior Gina Rossi (Norristown, Pa.) converted a penalty stroke at the 16:57 mark to stretch the lead to three. Vrettos pushed the lead to 4-0 at the 10:19 mark and Kelly Beine (Medford, N.J.) scored another goal before halftime to create a five-goal cushion. Mary Krauss rounded out the scoring for Villanova with a second half goal while Susan Stewart netted a late goal to prevent freshman goaltender Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) from posting her sixth shutout of the season.

Villanova dominated play throughout, outshooting the Hoyas 23-0 in the first half and 35-4 for the game.

Next up for the Wildcats is a road game at Lehigh on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
