'Cats Face #7 Liberty In BIG EAST Semifinal Match Friday In Lynchburg

FH To Rematch Ranked Flames In Semis At 1 P.M.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Villanova field hockey team will head to Lynchburg, Va. to take on #7 Liberty in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST tournament on Friday November 8, at 1:00 p.m.

Despite the loss last week to #7 Liberty, Villanova still made their way to the BIG EAST tournament thanks to UConn defeating Quinnipiac, 4-2, last week. The Bobcats struck first and led at halftime and most of the game. The Huskies took control of the game in the final 15 minutes tallying three goals in a span of eight minutes in route to a win and sending the 'Cats to the BIG EAST tournament.

Villanova will battle the Flames again after falling to #7 Liberty a week ago in Lynchburg, 5-0. The nationally ranked Flames got off to an early start by punching in a goal within the first 10 minutes of action. Liberty struck again with less than five minutes remaining in the half to double their lead at the break. LU carried the momentum into the second half; the Flames had 10 shots in the third frame. Freshman Sophie Volkel played great by only giving up one goal in the third period and making seven saves. The 'Cats were unable to keep up with Liberty as the seventh ranked Flames secured a 5-0 victory. Despite the loss, Volkel continued to play well in her freshman season, tallying 12 saves (career high) on the day.

The Flames are still ranked #7 in the national poll. The winner of this match will face the winner of UConn and Old Dominion.

The game on Friday will be streamed on ESPN +
