Field Hockey Wildcats Post Shutout Win Over Providence

Oct. 9, 1999

Villanova, Pa.- Sophomore Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) scored two goals and freshman Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) made five saves to lead the Wildcats to their second consecutive Big East Conference victory, a 5-0 victory over Providence at Villanova Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

There were many standouts for the Cats on this day.

Senior Katie Craig (Rydal, Pa.) scored her second game-winning goal in as many games, when she gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. Senior Gina Rossi (Norristown, Pa.) was credited with an assist on the play.

Vrettos led the scoring charge in the second half with a pair of goals. She gave the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage at the 30:37 mark of the second half when she tipped a Krissy Malchitsky shot past Providence netminder Andrea Weyl. Rossi then gave Villanova a 3-0 cushion when she converted a penalty stroke at the 26:25 mark of the second half.

Nicole DiMaggio's 12th goal of the campaign made it 4-0 Villanova and Vrettos closed out the scoring with a goal at the 19:35 mark.

The Wildcats turned in an excellent defensive effort, keeping the shots on Helwig to a minimum. Helwig came up big, though, with several key saves in the first half when the outcome was still in question. Freshman back Sarah Burdette (Washington Crossing, Pa.) and sophomore Malchitsky (Perkiomenville, Pa.) helped bottle up Friar scoring leader Erica Hebert.

Villanova (8-5 overall, 2-1 Big East) returns to action on Oct. 11 against William & Mary in a 4:00 p.m. start at Villanova Stadium.
