SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Villanova dropped a 4-1 decision to the University of Connecticut on Friday in the semifinal round of the Big East Tournament held here. The Huskies advance to face the winner of Boston College vs. Syracuse, while the Wildcats conclude their season with a 13-8 record.
Connecticut (20-0), ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season, scored the game's first goal at the 21:00 mark of the first half. Big East Defensive Player of the Year Nicole Castonguay scored for the Huskies with assists awarded to Laura Klein and Alison Sharpe. That trio combined to give UConn a 2-0 lead at the 9:27 mark of the first half. The 2-0 score held up through the first half.
The Wildcats mounted a strong second half rally, outshooting the Huskies 14-8 in the stanza. Husky goalie Danielle Vile was forced to make nine saves and was beaten once, by Villanova sophomore Kelley Beine (Medford, N.J.) at the 15:44 mark of the second half. Classmate Brooke Bergmann was credited with an assist on the goal.
A goal from Kathryn Tabor and another from Castonguay rounded out the Connecticut scoring.
Wildcat goalie Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was credited with 14 saves on the day.
