VILLANOVA, Pa. - On July 16, 1998, six Villanova University men's basketball players, including hometown hero Howard Brown, visited the Ricketts Community Center in Pottstown, Pa., and spent the evening with approximately 50 children playing games and signing autographs.
With assistant coach Peter Zaharis organizing the event with Ricketts Director Jim Koonce, the Wildcats played shooting games with the children, followed by a question-and-answer period and autograph session. Joining Brown were seniors John Celestand and Rafal Bigus, junior T.J. Caouette, and freshmen Johnny Holley and Bobby Smith.
"This means a lot to me," said Brown, who was selected as the Wildcats' Most Valuable Player last season. "I always like to help out with the kids, and it's important not to forget where you come from, and who has helped you along the way. I grew up playing at the center."
The event was attended by approximately 100 parents and friends, who cheered Brown and the rest of the Wildcats throughout the evening.
