Sept. 12, 1999

VILLANOVA, PA. ----- On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Wildcats exploded for eight second half goals en route to a 10-0 shutout over visiting the Virginia Commonwealth Rams on Villanova's home turf at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats rebounded from a 2-0 loss to Lafayette and improve to 3-1 on the season. The Rams fall to 1-3.

Senior co-captain Gina Rossi (Norristown, Pa.) put the ?Cats on the board seven minutes into the contest on a penalty corner set-up by teammates Clare Turkington (Collegeville, Pa.) and Katie Craig (Rydal, Pa.). Villanova added to their lead with 16:24 remaining in the half when junior Nicole DiMaggio (West Chester, Pa.) netted her third goal of the season.

Villanova goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (3 saves), who recorded her first career shutout, denied two VCU breakaway attempts allowing the ?Cats to take a 2-0 lead into the lockerroom.

In second half action, Villanova's offensive attack scored early and often. Senior Mary Krauss (Swarthmore, Pa.) scored her first of three second half goals just 3:14 into the half paving the way for the eight goal second half. Sophomores Kelly Beine (Medford, N.J.) and Krissy Malchitsky (Perkiomenville, Md.) also cashed in with a multi-goal half as they each scored two goals apiece.

Senior co-captian Clare Turkington broke a Villanova school record as she recorded five assists on the afternoon. The previous record was set by Melissa Rea on Nov. 3, 1991, when she tallied four assists versus Georgetown.

Villanova returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Philadelphia to challenge the Pennsylvania Quakers. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
