Overtime Loss Shocks Wildcats

VILLANOVA, Pa.----- With 8:27 remaining in the first overtime period, Syracuse (11-5, 2-1) forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa.) scored her second goal of the evening giving the Orangewomen a 5-4 victory over the host Villanova Wildcats (8-5, 1-3) in Big East field hockey action. The overtime loss marks the third time the 'Cats have dropped to a Big East team in overtime.

Syracuse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Laura Fitzpatrick (Dalton, Pa.) 8:15 into the contest.

The Wildcats fought back to tie the game at 1-1 when senior Nicole DiMaggio (West Chester, Pa.) tallied her 11th goal of the season, at the 23:12 mark, on a pass from junior Krissy Malchitsky (Perkiomenville, Pa.). The goal was the first goal Syracuse had allowed in over 331 minutes.

The 'Cuse responded with goals by M. Aronowicz and sophomore Dalton Beaver (Williamsville, N.Y.) giving the Orangewomen a 3-1 lead with 4:06 remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats once again scratched their way back scoring three unanswered goals. Junior Jennifer Banzhof (Allentown, Pa.) recorded her first career-goal 1:38 before intermission cutting the Syracuse lead to 3-2.

The second goal of during the stretch came with 22:00 minutes left to play when sophomore Sarah Burdette (Washington Crossing, Pa.) successfully converted a penalty stroke.

Less than one minute later Villanova struck again when the 'Cats' leading scorer Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) registered her 13th goal of the season when she one-timed a centering pass from Brooke Bergmann (Fallsington, Pa.) past Syracuse goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emamaus, Pa.) - 17 saves.

Freshman Emily Smith (Mifflinburg, Pa.) knotted the score with 11:20 left to play sending the game to overtime.

Villanova returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the final home game of the 2000 season versus non-conference opponent, Duke University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
