Player Focus Article - Josey Mikulyuk

April 29, 2000

If you spend ten minutes around Josey Mikulyuk, it is highly likely that your stomach will be killing you from laughing so hard. Whether it's one of her famous one liners or "the voice", it is virtually impossible to be bored around Josey. Described as "fun to be around" by teammate Molly Hanneman, Mikulyuk also brings a serious, determined, "down to business" side to the ballfield.

The sophomore from Mishawaka is coming off a tremendous rookie season. Not only was she an offensive asset, her stability and knowledge behind the plate kept us in a lot of games last year. "Josey, Josey, Josey, Josey. She's my hero!" states pitcher Keri Stoller, "I have so much confidence with her behind the plate-she's very knowledgeable about the game."

Admired by her teammates, Hanneman explains, "her spirit and drive push us harder. Josey's energy lifts everyone on our team whenever something goes wrong." Coaches DiBernardi and Goss notice her ability and willingness to help her teammates. "Josey is a great catcher. She has done a great job helping our younger athletes get ready for the season." This is quite a compliment, as Josey is only a sophomore herself.

When asked about her personal softball highlights, Mikulyuk maintains a modest attitude. "Putting one off the scoreboard last year wasn't so bad," she replied.

It's her "hysterical modesty" which makes Josey such an important part of our team. Individuals like Josey are a rarity. Villanova Softball sure did get lucky when this Hoosier came to town.
